Jets' Smith only looking ahead, not back at 2013

The Associated Press

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) Geno Smith isn't interested in speaking about the past.

The New York Jets' second-year quarterback has moved on from his up-and-down rookie season and his focus is squarely on the regular-season opener against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.

The talk all summer was how Smith would progress from last year, when he threw 12 touchdown passes and 21 interceptions. He's over all that now, saying Wednesday that last season "doesn't matter." Especially after he had a solid summer in which he improved as a quarterback and established himself as a team leader.

A good outing against the Raiders on Sunday could go a long way in building the franchise's trust in him.

Coach Rex Ryan says all Smith has to do is "take off from where you left off."
