Jeanie Forrester withdraws proposal for Laconia State School property
LACONIA (AP) — A New Hampshire state senator has withdrawn her proposal to convert the former site of the State School in Laconia into a substance treatment center.
The Laconia Citizen reports state Sen. Jeanie Forrester took the proposal off the table on Monday after hearing opposition from the community.
The plan would have allowed the state to solicit proposals for private use of the State School property to provide substance misuse treatment programs. The Senate Finance Committee approved the proposal last week.
The proposal was attached to another bill and was sent to the state Senate floor for a full vote on Thursday before it was withdrawn.
The State School was closed in 1991 and was converted to a prison for nonviolent offenders. The facility shut down in 2009.
