ERROL — An alert north country family was able to spot a man's distress signal after he crashed his snowmobile Saturday.

New Hampshire Fish and Game say the family of Keith Filteau, 29, of Berlin was watching for him Saturday night when they spotted his S.O.S. signal from his flashlight after he crashed on Umbagog Lake.

Fish and Game officials report that Filteau was returning from gassing up his snow machine about 7:30 Saturday night when he hit a plowed embankment where a bob house had once been. Filteau was ejected and landed on the frozen lake.

Following the crash, Filteau used a flashlight as a beacon to summon help from family members who were staying at his camp.

At the time all available members of Errol Fire and Rescue were assisting with another snowmobile crash in the Atkinson and Gilmanton Academy Grant, a significant distance away. As a result, a mutual aid call was initiated with rescuers from the Colebrook Fire Department and 45th Parallel EMS responding to the area.

New Hampshire State Troopers and NH Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers responded to the area as well, all coming from a significant distance away.

Filteau was ultimately transported by 45th Parallel EMS to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities believe speed and unforeseen hazards on the lake where the chief contributing causes of this crash. Filteau was wearing a helmet and eye protection at the time of the crash and alcohol was determined to not be a factor.
