CONCORD – The state Senate’s Republican leader says New Hampshire’s first GOP governor in a dozen years is “going to be an easy person to work with.”
And in a one-on-one interview with NH1 News, state Sen. Jeb Bradley added that the first priority next year is putting together “a realistic budget.”
The former congressman and Republican from Wolfeboro also said his party held onto its majority in the state Senate for the third straight election thanks to “the results” accomplished in the chamber the past two years.
Bradley spoke with NH1 News on Thursday, minutes after the Senate Republican caucus unanimously voted to return state Sen. Chuck Morse of Salem as the chamber’s president for the 2017-2018 legislative session. Bradley said that he was “proud to support” Morse, whom he called “a proven leader.”
Bradley was confident that Morse will name him to continue as majority leader.
Democrats aimed to take back control of the chamber for the first time in six years, but fell far short in Tuesday’s election. The GOP held a 14-10 majority going into the election, and depending on the results of a recount in District 7, they’ll maintain their current advantage, or will control the chamber by a 13-11 margin.
“I think voters responded to what we’ve done the past couple of years. We clearly solved problems. More resources for heroin, addiction, mental health, families with a disabled child. So we have met the needs of the state of New Hampshire, but very importantly, we did it without hurting taxpayers. We protected taxpayers. No new taxes. And we’ve grown jobs in the state of New Hampshire,” Bradley touted.
“I think as people looked at the results of the Republican led Senate, they’ve thought ‘these guys have done a good job’. And I think that’s why we won the chamber again,” he added.
The GOP also held onto the majority in the state House of Representatives, as well as the Executive Council. And executive councilor Chris Sununu became the first Republican elected governor since Craig Benson in 2002.
Asked about working with Sununu, Bradley said “we do look forward obviously to working with Gov.-elect Sununu. I know Chris well. Chuck knows Chris well. He’s going to he’s going to be an easy person to work with. People like him. He’s very friendly. I think he will be open to trying to do the things that we do, solve problems and protect taxpayers and focus on jobs. And so I look forward to working with Chris.”
Bradley said task number one starting in January is to “put together a realistic budget.”
But he added that what happens in the nation’s capital next year, with a Republican White House and Congress, will impact the State House.
“I think they will be change coming from Washington too, so we’ll get to react to that in terms of health care and how we can fashion health care that drives down costs hopefully but improves access for people. I think those are some of the priorities that we see coming our way,” Bradley explained.
