Irene first made landfall in North Carolina and weakened to a tropical storm on Aug. 28, 2011. But it moved into western New England with high winds, heavy rains and flash flooding that hit Vermont particularly hard.

Irene is blamed for 12 deaths in New England, and left thousands without power while flooding washed out roads and damaged many homes and businesses.

State damage breaks down as follows:

NH: $35 million
VT: $733 million
Maine: $22.7 million
Mass.: $194.5 million
RI: $103.7 million
Conn: $235 million

Number 4 hurricane.
