Hundreds attend wake for former Portsmouth Mayor Eileen Foley

PORTSMOUTH - Hundreds lined the halls of Portsmouth City Hall on Friday evening to pay their respects to former Mayor Eileen Foley.

The wake was held inside the Eileen Dondero Foley Council Chambers, which in a taped message played for mourners, Foley's personal friend Vice President Joe Biden calls a fitting tribute.

"What better way to memorialize someone who gave up everything for everybody else, that was Eileen Foley," Biden said.

Foley served eight terms as mayor, seven terms in the New Hampshire Senate among many other local positions.

All of the living mayors of the city gathered to honor their friend.

"As the new mayor of Portsmouth, I'm honored not just because I'm following in her footsteps so to speak, but we were very close family friends as well," Mayor Jack Blalock said.

"She certainly is somebody that we all have a lot of respect for. She showed a great deal of leadership and was really connected to this Portsmouth community, this is her community," Former Mayor Bob Lister said.

A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Church, followed by a procession through City Hall.
