Hundreds attend vigil for Baby Doe Bella Bond; Mother, boyfriend appear in court

DEER ISLAND, Mass. - As the sun set on Boston, people started to gather for a vigil for Bella Bond. A woman from New Hampshire felt compelled to drive down from Somersworth to pay her respects.

“I’m glad she was found, and I’m glad that she is resting in peace,” said Judy Ross.

Earlier today, Bella’s mother Rachelle Bond and her boyfriend Michael McCarthy were in court.

McCarthy - who allegedly believed Bella was possessed by demons - is accused of killing the two-year old, then hiding her in a refrigerator for several days, before Bond helped him dump the body into the water.

“No child ever, ever should have had to endure that,” said District Attorney Dan Conley.

Bella’s body washed ashore at Deer Island, where residents feel she’s their adopted daughter.

The community is keeping the memory of this innocent child alive, as House Speaker Robert DeLeo spoke out directly to Bella.

“You are a daughter by the way of the town of Winthrop, and you are a little girl not only for our state but for people throughout the country,” DeLeo said.

The town says they’ve discovered Bella’s great grandmother is buried at a cemetery here in Winthrop.

They would like to have Bella buried with her.
