Hotel housekeeping finds drugs in Portsmouth room, calls police
PORTSMOUTH- A housekeeping crew at a Portsmouth hotel discovered what police say are illegal drugs in a room they were cleaning Wednesday, leading to the arrest of a Dover man.
Portsmouth Police Dept. Sgt. David Colby said Thursday Geraldo Gonzalez, 53, of Dover was arrested after he fled police who had responded to America's Best Inn on Woodbury Avenue.
Colby said, "the hotel staff was cleaning a room and came across what they believed to be narcotics." Colby said the workers became "very uncomfortable with the registered guest ultimately identified as Mr. Gonzalez and called police."
The first officer to respond to the hotel saw Gonzalez fleeing out the back of the hotel, said Colby. Additional officers were called to the scene and set up a perimeter to corral him. The nearby New Franklin School was notified of the police activity in the area.
A police officer heard noise behind a fenced-in Dumpster, "at which point responding units challenged him at gunpoint," said Colby.
Colby said a quantity of "what appears to be cocaine" was found in Gonzalez's room.
Gonzalez surrendered without incident. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Portsmouth District Court Thursday.
