Horse in Derry falls in the mud; firefighters help animal get back on its hooves

NH1.com

DERRY - Firefighters were called to help a horse on Christmas Eve who got trapped in the mud outside a barn on Hampstead Road.

The owner discovered the horse lying on its side in about a foot of loose water mud. Firefighters say the horse was clearly in distress and hypothermic. It had apparently fallen during the night and had churned the mud by kicking as it tried to get up.

Fire crews used sheets of plywood to move the horse to solid ground. They helped the animal up and into a stall, but the horse collapsed again. Firefighters stayed with the animal and got instructions to care for the horse from a veterinarian over the phone until the vet was able to make it to the barn.

NH1's Jenna Abate was at the scene and will report additional details as they come available.
