HOOKSETT - A passenger in a car pulled over in a traffic stop is under arrest for repeatedly assaulting a police officer.

Officer Michael Carpentier pulled over a car Monday at 12:45 a.m. on West Alice Avenue. While Carpentier was speaking with the operator of the vehicle, the passenger identified as Winona Sutherland-White, 51, of Hooksett, kept exiting the car to interfere with Carpentier, police said.

Officer Daniel Byers arrived to assist Carpentier and that's when Sutherland-White allegedly threw a punch at Byers, striking him in the left forearm. While she was being put into the back of a police cruiser, Sutherland-White kicked Byers in the chest with the heel of her boot, police said.

Sutherland-White was transported directly to the Merrimack County House of Corrections. During the transport, Byers called for assistance on Interstate 93 northbound at Exit 12 due to Sutherland-White escaping from her handcuffs while in the backseat of his patrol car. An officer from Concord and Bow Police Departments assisted Officer Byers with securing Sutherland-White into transport restraints.

Sutherland-White is being charged with two counts of simple assault on a police officer and one count of resisting arrest. Sutherland-White is being held on $6,000 cash bail at the Merrimack County House of Corrections until her arraignment Tuesday.
