Hollis selectmen confirm: They don’t want a gas pipeline in town

HOLLIS – Just in case there was any doubt, the Hollis Board of Selectmen has unanimously passed a resolution that they will “take any and all action they deem appropriate to oppose the grant of regulatory approval, before any federal, state, or other regulatory agencies, for the construction, operation and maintenance” of a natural gas pipeline through town. The resolution, passed by the board at its regular meeting Monday night, follows Saturday’s special town meeting at which residents voted 419-1 to oppose the proposal from Kinder Morgan and its Tennessee Gas Pipeline subsidiary. (See related story.) It is designed to present the town’s official position before the Site Evaluation Committee, the state body will have some say in the location of any gas pipeline. The resolution, which tops 975 words, echoes the 14-article warrant approved by voters, 419-1, on Saturday. This level of detail is designed to answer specific concerns about environment, economics and rural character that various state agencies will consider as part of the New Hampshire Site Evaluation process, which must approve any gas pipeline. Hollis has already spent at least $50,000 on fees for attorneys and consultants in response to the possibility of a buried pipeline going through town. Houston, Texas-based Kinder Morgan wants to build a large gas pipeline across northern Massachusetts, connecting fracked shale fields in New York state to Dracut, Mass., where a number of gas pipelines converge. It has also proposed a buried transmission line running north from Pepperell, Mass., through Hollis to Route 101A, where gas would be distributed by Liberty Utilities. Kinder Morgan’s initial maps show the buried pipeline, which would require maintaining a mowed 50-foot-wide corridor, heading through Beaver Brook Association conservation land and a number of private parcels.
