Hiker dies in icy water at Purgatory Falls
LYNDEBOROUGH - A Massachusetts woman hiking at Purgatory Falls, on the Mont Vernon/Lyndeborough town line, has died after she reportedly slipped from the edge of a steep embankment and fell into the icy water below.
The NH Fish and Game Dept. said the woman, 50, was hiking with a companion Sunday afternoon around 1 p.m.
Officials said she was prepared for the weather, and was wearing ice cleats - typically worn to improve traction on slippery surfaces.
The victim's identity has not yet been released, and a State Medical Examiner was on scene Sunday.
Officials said the area around the falls is very steep, rocky and covered in icy surfaces.
Purgatory Falls, known locally as Upper Falls along Purgatory Brook, used to be a popular summer location for picnics and gatherings, but those who live nearby say it's become too dangerous for many parts of the year and not suitable to swim.
The trail has been closed until further notice.
