Heroin and fentanyl overdoses up in Dover

DOVER - Five people in the Garrison City have already died this year due to heroin and/or fentanyl overdoses.

On top of the deaths, 33 other people have been treated for overdose symptoms. In 2014, there were 45 reported overdoses and six deaths.

"This is a weekly, sometimes multiple times a week, event," Lt. Brant Dolleman of the police department told NH1 News Monday.

People are using drugs everywhere in the city, Dolleman said. Police respond to single-family homes, apartment complexes and parking lots where people are reportedly passed out.

A man on parole was even caught shooting up in the bathroom at Strafford County Superior Court recently.

Dolleman said some of the people who are treated for a heroin overdose are seen by emergency responders multiple times.

"I think a lot of people have the misconception that somebody overdoses and that's their overdose," Dolleman said. "Well...no. Often times, users of these drugs are going to overdose multiple times."

There is hope for those who suffer from addiction in Dover. On Broadway, the Triangle Club hosts five heroin anonymous meetings a week.

"We had 77 max out at one of the meetings. That's a lot of people that could be dead," organizer Mike Kimball said.

Kimball said most of the people who attend the HA meetings are under the age of 35. And the club provides a model that works, based upon the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program.

The Triangle Club also works because people show up voluntarily, unlike when they get sent to rehab or jail.

"Somebody who wants to be here, walks in here and feels safe," Kimball said. "That's half the battle."

The Triangle Club also provides services for alcoholics, and those with nicotine addictions.
