Hearing set for man accused of leaving nephews home alone

The Associated Press

MANCHESTER - A hearing is set for the 25-year-old man who police say left his twin, 9-year-old nephews mostly alone in their apartment for four months after their parents took three siblings to Nigeria.

Giobari Atura told police he would stop by every couple of days to leave food for the boys. When police got involved in November, they found no edible food in the refrigerator and only ramen noodles in a cabinet.

Atura was charged in December with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. He's due in court Thursday.

His brother left for Nigeria with his wife and three of their children in July, intending to return in August. Illness and passport problems delayed their return.

Because they left the boys in care of a relative, they weren't charged.
