Hampton police detective charged with DWI after crash on I-95 in NH

HAMPTON - A police officer is facing drunken driving charges after hitting a guardrail on Interstate 95 and blocking an exit.

Christopher Gilroy, 37 of Exeter, hit a guardrail near Exit 2 while driving a 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and partially blocked it, according to the N.H. State Police. Gilroy is a detective with the Hampton Police Department.

According to the investigation, Gilroy tried to take the exit's off-ramp at about 10:30 p.m., but drove over the cement median and hit the exit sign, then came back over the median again and hit a guardrail twice.

The exit was closed for about an hour as crews worked to clean the scene.

Gilroy was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. Hampton police said the incident is being investigated as a personnel matter.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 20.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the N.H. State Police Troop A at (603) 223-8490 or the Hampton Police Department at (603) 929-4444.
