Hampton Branch/ Eastern Div. Mainline

We had a question from @girlfriend-is-better about the railroad tracks in Hampton and Seabrook. Unfortunately Tumblr was having trouble posting my answer, even though i posted it four times! Anyways, the tracks were part of the Boston and Maine Railroad’s Eastern Division Mainline from Boston to Portsmouth. The B&M provided passenger service until 1965, when the drawbridge across the Merrimack River in Newburyport, MA was taken out of service. After this, the line became a dead-end “freight-only” branch from Portsmouth south to Seabrook. Trains rarely traveled south of the nuclear power plant, which received materials by rail during its construction in the 1970s. The tracks from Hampton to Seabrook were abandoned in 1982. The tracks from Portsmouth to Hampton were abandoned in 2013 and are being removed now. The last freight ran a few years ago. It’s important to note that this line was recently seriously considered for a revival of passenger service from Boston to Portsmouth, but that is now impossible. Pictures can be seen here:
