Hampton beautification project defaced by juvenile's graffiti

HAMPTON – Months after painting an outdoor wall for a downtown beautification effort, police say it was defaced with graffiti.

According to, the wall is on the back of the Seaside Elderly Day Out Center. A private group called Experience Hampton had paid about $1,500 to paint the wall, which was part of a larger effort to light and fix up a walkway between Lafayette Road and the town's municipal lot in November.

Police say they have arrested a juvenile in connection with the graffiti after getting a tip about a youth who'd recently purchased spray paint.

John Nyhan, president of Experience Hampton, said seeing the wall sprayed with graffiti was disappointing. “People know what we did to make an impact on that area, and for one silly kid to come in with a can of spray paint and to do that,” Nyhan said.
