Great white shark sighting in Maine around 40 anniversary of movie Jaws

WELLS, ME - There was a great white shark sighting in Maine around the 40 anniversary of the release of Jaws.

On June 20, 1975 Jaws was released in movie theaters.

On Saturday, there was a great white shark sighting at Wells Beach in Maine. Police in Wells said people aboard a charter fishing boat reported seeing a great white shark off the coast of Moody Beach.

According to the Portsmouth Herald the Wells harbormaster sent a boat out but was unable to confirm the sighting. Officials said a sighting at this time of year, so close to the beach, is unusual.

Wells police said they don't feel the need to close the beach at this time, but if there are any additional sightings, they leave open that possibility.
