Granite Gorge ski area ordered to shut down chairlift after accident Sunday

ROXBURY - The Granite Gorge ski area has been ordered to shut down its chairlift until it can be inspected by state officials after an accident injured two people.

Keene fire officials say two ski lift chairs collided, affecting four people who had to be extricated and brought down off the mountain on Sunday afternoon. Two were brought to Cheshire Medical Center for evaluation. Three other people also had to be lowered down from the chairlift as a result of the incident.

Both Granite Gorge Ski Patrol and the Keene fire personnel were involved in the rescue, which took about an hour.

The state Tramway Division was informed of the accident, and Granite Gorge was instructed not to reactivate the chairlift without state approval, fire officials said.

Granite Gorge, contacted by phone on Sunday afternoon, would not comment on the incident.
