Governor and Executive Council accept resignation of NH attorney general

CONCORD – New Hampshire Attorney General Joe Foster submitted his resignation on Wednesday, effective at the end of the month.

The move was expected, as Foster’s term concludes on March 31. Gov. Chris Sununu and the Executive Council quickly accepted Foster’s resignation.

A former Democratic state senator, Foster was appointed to serve as attorney general by then-Gov. Maggie Hassan, who is now the state’s junior U.S. Senator. Sununu, the state’s first Republican governor in a dozen years, was long expected to replace Foster when his term ended.

In a letter to the Governor dated February 23, Foster wrote that “it has been an extraordinary honor to serve the people of New Hampshire and lead the great men and women of the Department of Justice. Their commitment to the State, its people, and to justice is second to none. It has been a great privilege to work with such a dedicated group of public servants.”

Speaking with reporters, Sununu said "Foster has done a good job for the state of New Hampshire."

Asked by NH1 News how the governor's search for a replacement is proceeding, Sununu said "we’re looking at various names and various candidates."

"We take the issue of a new attorney general extremely seriously and we’re vetting out a variety of different candidates," the governor added.

And asked by NH1 News if he'll name a nominee when the Executive Council meets again in two weeks, Sununu answered "the sooner the better. I can’t give you an exact timetable but we’re working very diligently through the process right now. We’re not going to wait."

Later Wednesday, Hassan put out a statement praising Foster.

“Throughout his time as Attorney General, Joe has demonstrated a relentless commitment to the pursuit of justice and his work has helped to make New Hampshire a stronger, more inclusive place to live," the senator wrote.

"I also want to thank Joe for his courage, integrity, and determination in pursuing investigations into the role that pharmaceutical companies play when it comes to our heroin, fentanyl, and opioid crisis – ensuring that we are using all the tools at our disposal to stem the tide of this epidemic. I join all Granite Staters in wishing Joe all the best in his future endeavors," Hassan added.
