Gorham man arraigned on murder charges
GORHAM - In Berlin District Court 25 year-old Cristopher Drouin, of Gorham, was arraigned on second degree murder charges on Tuesday. He's accused of shooting and killing 27 year-old Michael Welch at about 6:40 p.m. Monday near Gorham's Town Common.
Police say they heard the shots from their station and were on the scene before Drouin could get away.
Sr. Asst. Attorney General Ben Agati said, "They were actually there for a swearing-in ceremony. When they heard gunshots outside, they immediately responded."
Police found 27 year-old Michael Welch lying on the ground with gunshot wounds, and say he died before he made it to the hospital.
People who worked with Welch at a Subway Sandwich Shop were stunned by the news. Samantha Newton said she was, "Just very emotional. Just trying to move forward, I guess."
Police say Drouin and Welch knew each other, but haven't released a motive. In addition to second degree murder, Drouin also faces attempted murder charges. Police say he shot at another man who was with Welch- 30-year-old John Gillespie- but that shot missed.
