Gilmanton library close to raising donations needed to stay open
GILMANTON - The Gilmanton Year-Round Library will shutter tomorrow, but supporters are close to raising the $47,500 needed to reopen and stay open for the year after voters cut the institution's funding earlier this month.
The Gilmanton Year-Round Library Association announced on its Facebook page Thursday that it is about $6,000 short of the $47,500 needed to keep the facility open. The page states the board of directors will meet Friday night to discuss the length of time the library will have to close.
"We are optimistic and feel that any closure will be a short-lived one," association members wrote on the library's Facebook page.
The $47,500 is needed to bridge a budget gap between the library's operational budget funded by taxes and private donations. Earlier this month, Town Meeting voters said no to using taxes to make up the difference by a margin of 18 votes. The association's website gyrla.org had taken in $41,428 in private donations as of noontime Thursday.
