BARNSTEAD - A couple in Barnstead is raising money for a stray cat that was recently shot, and needs to have his front leg amputated.
Garf, a middle-aged orange and white tabby cat, has been hanging around Chari and Nathan Gauntt's house for two years, but a few weeks ago, they noticed he wasn't putting weight on one of his legs.
It took a while to wrangle him up, but eventually Garf got to the vet, where X-rays were taken.
Garf, it turns out, was shot twice.
Chari is convinced it wasn't an accident.
"To get the call that this was a gun shot, and then the added information that he has been shot before is absolutely disheartening, and it's just devastating to know," Chari told NH1 News Thursday. "He's such a sweet cat, to know that somebody would do that is just, it's gut wrenching."
Chari said she and her husband moved to Barnstead because it is a safe community, and now she is saddened that someone would purposely hurt an innocent animal.
The Gauntts have taken to the internet to get support for Garf, using gofundme.com. So far, they have raised almost $3,000 since Wednesday.
Any money left over after the amputation will go to help Animal Allies of Manchester.
On Thursday, Garf was still at Suncook River Veterinary Clinic in Epsom, where he is being monitored by staff.
Chari, who is looking after a litter of kittens Garf recently fathered, can't wait until the little guy comes back to the neighborhood.
"He's such a love and he will just snuggle right up to my husband and get all cozy and fall asleep right in his arms," she said.
The police department in Barnstead has become involved in this case, asking the public to help identify the shooter. Anyone with information can call 269-8100.
