FOX News has announced that the founder and former chairman of the company Roger Ailes has died.

"I am profoundly sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes, passed away this morning," said his wife Elizabeth Ailes in a statement released Thursday.

"Roger was a loving husband to me, to his son Zachary, and a loyal friend to many," said his widow.

Ailes was 77.

Ailes resigned as CEO of Fox News last July, two weeks after he was sued by former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson over sexual harassment allegations. The suit, which ended in a settlement, sparked a firestorm at the cable station that has gone on to engulf superstar anchor Bill O'Reilly and Fox's president Bill Shine, both of whom who have since resigned.
