CONCORD – A former bookkeeper for an appliance store in the Lakes region has pleaded guilty to mail fraud and filing false tax returns.

Susan Durrance, 55, of Farmington embezzled more than $389,000 from a store where she worked in Wolfeboro and later Ossipee between 2005 and 2011, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Donald Feith.

She took the money by using the store's operating accounts to make payments on her personal credit accounts and to write checks to herself. She also wrote a $2,999 check to a tractor company to pay for a tractor for her personal use.

She was charged with filing false tax returns because she failed to report the stolen income.

Durrance will be sentenced in U.S. District Court in Concord on March 16.
