BRENTWOOD — A former Portsmouth Herald sports editor has struck a plea agreement that will resolve charges that he allegedly was in possession of child pornography.

The Union-Leader reported Frank Coppola of Nottingham is expected to enter a guilty plea to charges in connection to allegedly emailing himself images that included a 5-year-old girl.

Prosecutors recently filed court papers indicating that misdemeanor charges may be pursued in the case. Coppola is expected to change his plea on July 21.

Coppola is facing four counts of attempted possession of child pornography for allegedly emailing himself images of children engaged in sexual activity between May 2014 and July 2014. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains free on bail.

Local police and the state’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force were tipped off about Coppola’s email in 2014. Google alerted authorities that a gmail address with the name “clubber4900” was linked to an image of a 5-year-old girl and an adult woman.

When told about the investigation, Coppola allegedly told an investigator that he was “addicted” to child pornography and had viewed potentially hundreds to thousands of images over the last five years, according to a police affidavit.
