Former city councilor named best-selling author by NY Times

PORTSMOUTH - Former City Councilor Stefany Shaheen learned that she had become a New York Times best-selling author when she was at a diabetes conference in Washington, D.C.

The book was titled, "Elle & Coach: Diabetes, the Fight for My Daughter's life, and the Dog Who Changed Everything" which Shaheen wrote along with Mark Dagostino. The book hit number six on the best-sellers list in the non-fiction paperback category.

Shaheen told seacoastonline.com that she was thrilled to hear the news.

The book tells the tale of her daughter, Elle's, struggle with diabetes and how a trained yellow lab, named Coach, helped to alert her when her blood sugar was either too high or too low.

The hardcover was released in August 2015 which was followed by attention from news sources such as, Good Morning America, People Magazine, Parade Magazine and CNN. Both Stefany and Elle have done publicity stops in New York, California, around New England and just last week they did an event in Washington, D.C. alongside a group of NFL players. The players included New England Patriot Dont'a Hightower.

“It’s so inspiring to hear people coming together to fight this issue,” Shaheen told the paper. “His mom has it (diabetes) and he’s seen how her life has been impacted.”

Shaheen pointed to the early support of the RiverRun Bookstore in Portsmouth and the Water Street Bookstore in Exeter for the book’s success. She is inspired that the book is raising awareness for diabetes.
