Footprints in snow help off-duty Belmont officer find man accused of breaking into home

BELMONT – Footprints in the snow and an off-duty officer helped police locate a man believed to have broken into at least one home in Belmont around 3 a.m. Monday.

According to police, 44-year-old Joseph Mazzitelli, of Belmont, is accused of entering one home via a garage.

Footprints revealed his presence around the windows of another home on the same street, police said.

Shortly after police were called, an off-duty officer reported encountering the man and assisting responding officers in locating him.

Police say Mazzitelli may have attempted to enter the homes through unlocked doors and windows. He is facing two counts of criminal trespass and one count of burglary for his alleged actions.

He was arraigned in Laconia Tuesday.
