Flag Day celebrated June 14
June 14 is Flag Day when the country celebrates the choice of the stars and stripes as the nation's flag.
Bernard J. Cigrand, a school teacher, tried to get Congress to declare June 14 as a national holiday many years ago, but it wasn't until 1949 when Congress approved the national observance of Flag Day.
According to U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs, there were many attempts at making a flag day. President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation in 1916 establishing a national Flag Day but it wasn't until 1949 that Congress, under then President Harry Truman, finally approved the national observance and signed it into law.
