CONCORD – The top Democrat in the New Hampshire House of Representatives will back Hillary Clinton on Tuesday.

NH1 News has learned that state House Minority Leader Steve Shurtleff will hold a news conference to endorse Clinton, to urge Granite State Democrats to unite behind her, and to denounce presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Until now, the six-term state representative from Penacook has stayed neutral during the Democratic primary season.

While Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont has won many of the most recent primary and caucus contests, the former secretary of state maintains a large lead over her rival in the race for delegates. Clinton’s expected to reach the number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination next Tuesday June 7, on the last day of the primary calendar.

According to the Clinton campaign, Shurtleff will announce at a 1pm news conference at the Legislative Office Building in Concord that he believes “it is time for Democrats to come together and do everything they can to support Hillary Clinton.”

Shurtleff, a veteran who served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, is expected to call out Donald Trump for what the Clinton campaign says is his “hypocrisy on veterans issues, which includes fraudulently touting his support for vets when his actual record has been one of disrespect.”

The House minority leader is also expected to tout that Clinton “will be a president who will fight for veterans and ensure that all veterans have access to the opportunities and tools they need to succeed upon returning home.”

Shurtleff’s endorsement comes one day after the nation marked Memorial Day. And it comes less than three weeks before the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s state convention.
