First on NH1 News: Ellison to make his 1st public appearance as DNC deputy chair at NH event

CONCORD – Keith Ellison will make his first public appearance as the Democratic National Committee’s deputy chair later this month in the Granite State.

NH1 News has learned that the congressman from Minnesota will attend and speak at the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s state committee meeting on March 25. The state party will announce the news in a release Tuesday morning.

Party officials say that Ellison will address “the future of the Democratic Party” at the session, which will include “the re-election of New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley.”

Early last month Buckley, who’s served eight years as state party chair, dropped his own bid for DNC chair and backed Ellison. But on Feb. 25 at the DNC winter meetings in Atlanta, Tom Perez, Labor Secretary during President Barack Obama’s second term, defeated Ellison 235-200 on the second ballot to win the DNC chair.

In a move to quickly try and unify a divided party, Perez named Ellison his deputy chair.

"We're thrilled that Keith is joining us to kick off the year" Buckley in a statement obtained by NH1 News.

"Granite Staters were excited by the energy and ideas he brought to the DNC race and I know he'll bring that same passion to the DNC itself as he and Chair Perez start to reshape our party at the national level. Tom Perez and Keith Ellison both understand that the type of grassroots that has made New Hampshire so successful in the past decade is what we need to win on a national level and in local races across the country,” he added.

Last week Buckley told reporters that he expects Perez will visit New Hampshire “relatively soon.”
