Fire towers help spot brush fires including 4-alarm fire in Merrimack

MILFORD- New Hampshire firefighters have already had a busy week battling brush fires. With the fire danger at a four out of five, the fires have spread quickly.

What many may not know, is a vital tool in fighting these kinds of fires can sometimes be a single person, miles away, high up in a tower.

Rick Todd, Special Deputy Forest Fire Warden mans the Federal Hill Fire Tower in Milford.

Wednesday, Todd helped crews coordinate efforts at brush fires in Mason, Northfield, Hudson, and the largest in Merrimack.

Todd was the first to see the smoke in Merrimack rise up above the trees. He immediately alerted fire crews to the exact location. Crews from surrounding towns responded to help put out the 14-acre fire.

The cause is under investigation.
