Fire destroys historic home in New Castle

NEW CASTLE — Fire destroyed a historic multi-family home on Portsmouth Avenue late Saturday but residents were able to safely escape.

According to seacoastonline.com, the home at 152 Portsmouth St. was the home of impressionist painter Edmund Tarbell

The two-alarm fire apparently started in the basement and spread to the rest of the building, where gusty winds made fighting the fire a challenge.

“Everyone was able to get out of the building and were taken care of by neighbors,” New Castle Fire Chief David Blanding said Sunday.

The fire was reported around 10 p.m. and required assistance from several Seacoast area fire departments to extinguish, a task that extended until well into Sunday morning.
