Fire behind Portsmouth High School believed to be arson

PORTSMOUTH — Police say a fire in the woods near the high school on Thursday night was deliberately set.

According to, Sgt. Chris Kiberd said investigating officers are "looking at suspects," and reviewing surveillance footage taken in the area.

Fire Chief Steve Achilles said firefighters arrived to find a 50-by-50-foot area of woods burning and used a forestry truck and other equipment to extinguish the fire. He said his initial investigation concluded the fire was arson.

"There is no other reason it would have started," Achilles said.

Anyone with information about the fire can leave anonymous tips with Seacoast Crime Stoppers at (603) 431-1199, online at, or by SMS text to CRIMES (274637) and including TIPSCS in the message.
