Final report of 2014 Amherst murder-suicide: Son purchased beer, cigarettes after killing mother

AMHERST - In a final report released by investigators, John Trombly visited two convenience stores after he shot and killed his mother and before killing himself.

According to the attorney general, John bought cigarettes, a 6-pack of beer and orange juice just minutes after he shot his mother, 65-year-old Elizabeth Trombly, on her kitchen floor.

Trombly, who had a blood alcohol concentration of .327 when he died, had an extensive history with alcohol addiction and suicidal threats.

John was hospitalized twice just months before the murder when he drank excessively and threatened to kill himself.

Elizabeth was killed around 7:30 a.m. the morning of Sept. 12, 2014 and John killed himself more than two hours later.

Authorities said John used an AK-47 rifle in the murder/suicide.
