Father, Boy Scout leader suffers fatal heart attack during hiking trip
LANCASTER - Fish and Game officials say a 51-year-old father from Maryland suffered a heart attack and died while leading a boy scout troop on a five-day hike of the Appalachian Trail.
Just before noon on Sunday Fish and Game received a call from state police reporting a medical emergency on the Crawford Path.
Twin Mountain Fire and EMS responded to the emergency as well as other officials.
CPR was started almost immediately but was not successful.
The victim, Vernon Rippeon, was one of four adults leading the troop on the hike. His two sons were among the boy scouts.
