Family says man assaulted his 7-week-old son

MERRIMACK - A man is being held on high bail for assaulting an infant and according to family, he is the child's father.

Chase Mariscal, 20, is accused of roughly handling and dropping a 7-week-old infant who was sent to the hospital for treatment.

The boy's maternal grandmother tells NH1 News, Mariscal, the child's mother and the baby were visiting from Arizona.

"One minute he's like I love you, I love you and the next's he's a complete rage, but he didn't say anything," said the child's grandmother, who didn't want to be named.

She says just after 2:30 a.m. Thursday, she found Mariscal holding her daughter in a headlock. When he let her go, things escalated, she said.

"He just ripped that baby our of her arms and like swung him up in the air," the woman said, "like he wasn't real."

Police said he then barricaded himself in a room while family called 911.

"Officers pulled up and that's when he hit the baby's head on the nightstand and then he dropped the baby on the floor," she said.

The baby was taken to the hospital with a head bruise and a cut on his foot. The family said he has been released and is being monitored at home.

Mariscal was arrested without incident, police said.

Police could not release the relationship between Mariscal and the baby, but said Mariscal and the baby's mother were intimately involved.

Mariscal is charged with two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, two counts of Attempted Second Degree Assault, Simple Assault and two counts of Reckless Conduct.

He's being held on $10,000 cash bail and will be in court October 8th.
