Family mourns death of husband and father gored by bull on Hampton Falls farm
HAMPTON FALLS – A local family is mourning the accidental death of a husband and father who was gored by a bull on his 21-acre farm last weekend.
Christopher Merrill, 51, was found dead in the pasture outside his home at 25 East Road on May 24 by police, the Union Leader reports.
"He died on the land that he loved," his wife, Elizabeth, told the Union Leader on Friday.
The Merrills had five Scottish Highlanders – three babies and two bulls.
On the day of the attack, May 23, Elizabeth Merrill said she went to run some errands in the morning. Assuming he was out doing chores, the family did not worry until dusk when he had not returned home.
After driving around the farm with flashlights and still unable to locate Merrill, they contacted state police, who found his body. An investigation that involved both police and the state Medical Examiner's Office led them to conclude that Merrill’s death was accidental and caused by the bull.
