Eyes on NH's Kelly Ayotte as US Senate takes up gun bills

CONCORD (AP) — Eyes are on Republican U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte as the Senate takes up four gun-related bills following a mass shooting in Orlando that killed 49 people.

Democrats are making gun control an issue in Ayotte's race against Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan. Votes are expected Monday evening.

Democrat-sponsored bills would expand background checks and keep suspected terrorists from buying guns. Ayotte voted against a similar terror watch list proposal late last year. A GOP bill would allow the government to delay gun sales to suspected terrorists for up to 72 hours; another would boost funding for the national background checks system.

Ayotte's office won't say how she plans to vote. She's working on related legislation with Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins, but details haven't been released and no vote is scheduled.
