Exeter Health Resources launches new grant program to help prevent youth suicide

EXETER — Exeter Health Resources is launching a new grant program as a youth suicide prevention initiative.

Youth suicide has been identified in Exeter Hospital’s last two Community Health Needs Assessments as a growing concern for community members. As part of a larger strategy to address this need, Exeter Health Resources has committed to a five year, $200,000 annual grant cycle.

“Fifteen percent of teenagers in grades 9-12 living in the Seacoast report contemplating suicide, with six percent saying they have made an attempt on their life. We need to change these statistics.” said Kevin Callahan, CEO of Exeter Health Resources. “We’re looking provide support to community organizations that specialize in services that may positively impact the root causes of youth suicide.”

Grants will be awarded to organizations focused in Rockingham County that address the root causes of youth suicide including substance misuse, teen depression, social isolation, abuse, bullying, lack of awareness and the communication and engagement barriers associated with the stigma of each of those issues in our community.

Exeter Health Resources invites 501(c) 3 organizations who are positioned to serve youth ages 10-18 in Rockingham County, New Hampshire to visit exeterhospital.com and review the guidelines and application for a grant in the range of $5,000 to more than $50,000. At the end of the first year of funding, organizations will be asked to present evidence of their impact and a plan for an additional year of funding. Organizations that can demonstrate impact against the underlying risks of youth suicide in the region will be reviewed and may be granted an extension for a second year of funding.

To be considered for this year’s grants, a letter of intent must be submitted by December 21, 2016. Grants will be awarded during the month of February 2017. For more information, visit exeterhospital.com or contact Jennifer McGowan at 603-580-7647 or jmcgowan@ehr.org.
