Ex-Belknap County deputy sheriff appeals inmate sex assault conviction

CONCORD — The attorney for a former deputy sheriff found guilty of sexually assaulting an inmate while transporting her from a county courthouse to prison is asking New Hampshire's highest court to overturn the conviction.

The Laconia Daily Sun reports attorney Brad Davis filed an appeal with the state Supreme Court following Ernest Justin Blanchette's April conviction.

Blanchette was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison. He faces several indictments for similar allegations.

His lawyer says there were multiple errors during the former Belknap County deputy sheriff's trial, including evidence that Davis says shouldn't have been allowed in court.

Davis also says Blanchette didn't directly supervise the inmate, who had been incarcerated at the New Hampshire State Prison for Women in Goffstown.
