Eversource considering the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for inspections in NH

The Associated Press

NASHUA — The largest energy provider in New England is considering the use of drones to get up close to bridges, wind turbines and other not easily-accessible places to help with inspections.

The Telegraph reports Pembroke-based JBI Helicopter provided a demonstration of the unmanned aerial vehicles Thursday during an exercise over Eversource power lines near downtown Nashua.

JBI is currently contracted by Eversource to make regularly scheduled inspection flights. But the use of drones for inspections purposes has been hailed as being less intrusive by utility officials.

Carol Burke, Eversource's transmission operations manager, says Thursday's event was a combination of an inspection and an evaluation of JBI's drones.

Burke says Eversource officials would examine the images taken by the drones to see if any assets need replacing or other maintenance work.
