EPSOM - An entire community came together Sunday afternoon to support one of their own as he battles cancer for the second time in just one year.

"I don't feel so scared. I mean I'm scared of the surgery and I'm scared of the outcome but they're here to just sort of take all that away from me for just one day." Brian Howard said as he walked into the Elks Lodge to greet his family and friends.

"We decided to do what Brian would do and step up and help," Kenneth Pennell said proudly of his longtime friend.

Hundreds of locals gathered, all in good spirits, to support Howard, described everyone who knows him as a generous man who has had a huge and lasting impact on his community.

Howard, a father to three, a husband, and an auto mechanic, is going to a Boston Hospital next Thursday to undergo a major surgery to remove a cancerous tumor growing in his neck. Together friends, family members and the owners of a few local businesses filled the lodge with six different local bands, including the Eric Grant Band, food and raffles, all in hopes of raising money to help cover Howard's outstanding medical expenses while also lifting his spirit.

"To think you've touched the lives of that many people and you didn't even know and they just want to take time out of their day to come help you and just be with you," Howard said. "And they're all here to just try and build me up. It's awesome."

"You know you see so many people go through similar experiences like this, and you watch their loved ones, this is pretty emotional, rally up for their friends and their family. And so for Brian, this is one of our own," said Eric Grant of the Eric Grant Band, a friend and previous co-worker.

With the help of social media, the story of Brian's battle with throat cancer reached thousands of people, opening up the doors to donations, and support from far more than just the Epsom community.
