Effort underway to keep Statehouse open on weekends

The Associated Press

CONCORD (AP) - On any given weekend in the state capital, House Majority Leader Steve Shurtleff says it's not unusual to see out-of-staters walking around the Statehouse lawn looking up at the golden dome and snapping photographs.

But because the building is closed on the weekend, all these visitors can do is admire it from the outside. Shurtleff and several other lawmakers are pushing an effort to keep the Statehouse open for the public on the weekends.

Statehouses across the country vary in their weekend hours. Advocates for keeping New Hampshire's Statehouse open say it would be a new tourist attraction that would bring people into Concord and the state and they'd spend money elsewhere.

Details of the plan, including the costs of security, are still being worked out.
