Eastern cougars may be gone for good - declared extinct

It may be time to give up on the eastern cougar.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced on Tuesday it has declared the eastern cougar extinct.

The last time the cat was seen was in Maine in 1938, according to CNN. The time may be arriving to move the animal from the "endangered" to "extinct" column.

An important difference is that endangered animals are protected by law, and extinct species are not.

There is a proposal to remove the cougar from the endangered list open to public review.
