Earthquake source of "loud explosion" in Brentwood, Exeter area Thursday morning

BRENTWOOD - Several people heard and felt a 1.6 magnitude earthquake around 3 a.m. Thursday.

Brentwood police officer Brett Wells was patrolling the area of Route 111A and Dalton Road when he heard a loud explosion followed by feeling the ground tremor, according to a post on the department's Facebook page.

Wells described the sound as being similar to a "sonic boom" followed by a minor earthquake tremor. He searched the area and found nothing that could be the cause of the sound or tremors.

Although no official earthquake was reported by the U.S. Geological Survey by early afternoon, the Weston Observatory at Boston College had logged it.
