Durham Town Council to decide whether to extend sales agreement for old town hall
DURHAM – The Durham Town Council will determine the fate of the Old Town Hall building Monday night.
City officials will decide whether they want to redevelop the current building in order to keep the district on the National Register of Historic Places, or to extend the sales agreement with a local developer who wants to demolish the building and turn that lot into a pharmacy.
The current buyer, Scott Mitchell, has purchased the land for $1.3 million. The original goal was to put that money towards the $2.9 million new town hall that the town just built.
If council members decide to not extend the sales agreement with Mitchell, it's back to the drawing board and council members will release bids for the land in the hopes of redeveloping the building instead of demolishing it.
