Drunken driver blamed for school bus accident in Belmont

BELMONT - A alleged drunken driver is blamed for rear ending a school bus on Friday in a hit-and-run accident that sent one student to the hospital with a minor injury.

Police arrested Raya Star, 29, of Laconia Road in Sanbornton, shortly after the accident. Based on a description from the bus driver, they were able to locate the vehicle involved in the accident just over the town line between Belmont and Sanbornton.

The crash occurred on Route 3 as the school bus was stopped at railroad tracks near the Winnisquam Bridge around 4 p.m.

Police say Sar showed obvious signs of impairment when stopped and admitted he'd been at a Christmas party where he had consumed several alcoholic drinks. Police say he failed a field sobriety test and was charged with driving while intoxicated along with conduct after an accident for fleeing the scene.

Sar was released on bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 7 in Laconia District Court.

The injured student, who suffered a banged head inside the bus, was treated and released from the hospital, police said.

Police are asking drivers to be responsible during the holiday season and not to drink and drive.
