Driver misses turn in Laconia, nearly lands in Lake Winnipesaukee

LACONIA - A man who missed a turn driving down Harglen Lane early Sunday morning nearly drove into Lake Winnipesaukee.

Police charged Matthew Loughlin, 31, of Abington, Mass., with driving under the influence. Just after 1 a.m., he apparently missed the turn on Harglen Lane, hit the railroad tracks and rolled down an embankment. Police say the vehicle came to rest on a small beach just before the lake.

Loughlin suffered minor scrapes and bruises. He was alone in the car, police said. He has been released on personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 12 in Laconia District Court.
