Driver dies after wind caused tree to fall on car

The Associated Press

CLAREMONT - Police say a man died in Claremont after a tree fell on his car during a strong storm.

Police say he was driving west on Chestnut Street at around 7:25 p.m. Sunday. A tree was blown down by the storm and struck the vehicle.

A news release said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Capt. Mark Chase says there no sign of speeding or other driver-related issues; it seems to be a tragic accident.

Police have not yet released the driver's identity, pending notification of family.

The street was closed to traffic due to downed power lines and trees. The storm caused up to 20,000 power outages; that number was down to about 8,500 on Monday morning. Trees and power lines were damaged in Claremont and Newport.
